Master the Maze of Medicare

If you are nearing 65 or retiring and losing your employer’s health coverage and baffled by all the terms of Medicare, you are not alone.
  • Do I need a Supplement Plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan?
  • Which one is right for me?
  • What is a Medicare Advantage Plan and how is it different from a Supplement Plan?
  • How does Part D fit in?

Most people are equally confused and unfortunately they don't understand their options.  As a result of this confusion, people suffer the proverbial "paralysis by analysis" syndrome and more times than not either pay more than they should or don't have the correct plan.

Let’s step back and start at the beginning...

3 months before you turn 65:
  • If you are already getting Social Security benefits, you will get your   Medicare information in the mail.
  • If you are not receiving Social Security benefits you will need to call Social Security at   800-772-1213 and tell them you want to enroll in Medicare.  You can also apply online at www.socialsecurity.gov/medicareonly.

When you get your Medicare ID card you will see effective dates for Part A and Part B.  The dates will be the 1st day of the month that you turn 65.

If you are still working when you turn 65 and have coverage under your employer’s plan, you may delay taking Medicare Part B until you leave your employer’s plan.  In 2016, the standard Part B premium amount is $121.80.  You will not be penalized for waiting to enroll in Medicare Part B as long as you are covered in your employer’s plan.

Once you decide to enroll in Medicare A and B you have some options in your coverage.
